The Sydney Film Festival opening night gala is one of my favourite events each year. Beyond being a fun night involving the premiere of a great new film, it holds a special place in my heart because the first feature film in which I had a role, LBF, premiered in Australia as part of the festival (it had its international premiere at South by Southwest).

This year, the film shown on opening night was Brendan Cowell's Ruben Guthrie, based upon his play of the same name. I absolutely loved it and found it really broke the mould of the oft nationally-panned Australian film, with thought-provoking subject matter set in a glossier world than we are accustomed to seeing in our locally-produced works. Ruben Guthrie will be released Australia-wide on June 18th, 2015, and I highly recommend it!
